Get Found on Google Before the Holiday Rush

Right around the end of October, something shifts. People start planning: gifts, parties, travel, home projects before guests arrive, and getting everything done before the year wraps up. A lot of that planning starts with a search on their phone. If your business isn't showing up when they do, the money goes to whoever is.

The good news is that you still have time. Google doesn't need months to notice a few smart fixes, and most of what matters this season is small, practical stuff you can knock out in a couple of weekends.

Why the Holidays Change How People Search

Holiday searches tend to be urgent and local. Someone needs a gift card for their neighbor, a cleaner before the in-laws arrive, a heater fixed before the first deep freeze, or a place to book a December appointment. They aren't browsing for fun. They're trying to cross something off a list, so they tap the first business that looks real and answers quickly.

That is great news for a small local business, because "looks real and answers quickly" is something you can control. You don't need a giant budget. You need accurate information in the right places.

Step 1: Fix Your Google Business Profile First

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up on the map and in the box at the top of local results. For most local businesses it's the single highest-return thing to clean up before a busy season.

  • Holiday hours. Add special hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's. Nothing frustrates a customer faster than driving to a closed door that Google said was open.
  • Phone number and website link. Make sure both are correct and that the link goes to a page that loads fast on a phone.
  • Services list. Add the specific things people search for this time of year, such as gift certificates, furnace tune-ups, holiday cleaning, or event makeup.
  • Fresh photos. Upload five to ten recent photos of your real work, your team, and your storefront or truck. Profiles with current photos look active, and active looks trustworthy.
  • Posts. Use the Updates feature to announce a seasonal offer or your holiday schedule. It takes five minutes.

If you don't have a profile yet, or it was set up years ago and nobody has touched it, that's the first place to start. We handle full setup for a flat $150, and you can read the longer walkthrough in how to get your business found on Google.

Step 2: Ask for Reviews While People Are Happy

Reviews do double duty. They help you show up, and they decide whether a stranger picks you over the business next to you. Busy season is the best time to collect them because customers are fresh off a good experience.

Don't wait for people to remember. Send a short text the same day with a direct link to your review page: "Thanks again, it was great working with you. If you have a minute, a quick Google review would mean a lot." Reply to every review you get, even with just a thank-you. Google notices that you're active, and future customers notice that you care.

Step 3: Make Sure Your Website Works on a Phone

Most holiday searches happen on a phone, often one-handed, often in a hurry. Pull up your site on your own phone right now and run through a quick test:

  • Can you find your phone number and tap it to call within a few seconds?
  • Does the page load before you lose patience?
  • Does it say what you do and where you serve, right at the top?
  • Is there an obvious next step, like "Call now" or "Request a quote"?

If the answer to any of those is no, that's the fix to prioritize. Our guide to what makes a good small business website covers the basics in more detail. And if your current site is the problem, a new one doesn't have to be a months-long project. Our sites start at $350 and go live in about a week, which means there's still time to have something solid up before December.

Step 4: Add a Simple Seasonal Page or Section

You don't need a whole holiday microsite. One short section on your homepage, or one dedicated page, is plenty. Say what you offer this season, your holiday hours, how far in advance people should book, and how to reach you. Use plain words that match how people search, like "holiday party catering in Indianapolis" or "furnace repair near me", instead of clever slogans.

A seasonal page is also easy to retire in January, which keeps your site tidy and your message current.

Step 5: Check That Your Info Matches Everywhere

Your name, address, and phone number should read the same on your website, your Google profile, Facebook, Apple Maps, Yelp, and any directory you're listed in. Small mismatches, like an old phone number or "Street" versus "St.", create confusion for both customers and Google. Spend an hour this week and clean them up. If you're not sure why your listing isn't climbing, this breakdown of why a business doesn't show up on Google is a good place to look for the cause.

A Simple Timeline

  • This week: update your Google Business Profile hours, photos, and services.
  • Next week: start asking for reviews and reply to the ones you already have.
  • Before mid-November: test your site on a phone and fix anything slow or confusing.
  • Before Thanksgiving: publish your seasonal section, double-check your info across directories, and set your holiday hours.

The bottom line: holiday customers are searching right now, and they reward the businesses that look current, answer fast, and make it easy to call. You don't have to do everything at once. Start with your Google profile, and build from there.
